Gemini vs ChatGPT

Neither Gemini nor ChatGPT wins outright in October 2026. ChatGPT has the higher ceiling for hard reasoning, coding, and computer automation. Gemini gives you more for less money, plus deep hooks into Google apps.

The race got tighter in September. Google shipped Gemini 3.8 Flash on September 2, 2026. One day later, OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 Astra, its first GPT-6 model.

Most comparisons online are already out of date. Many still talk about GPT-5.4, Sora video, or a $249 Gemini Ultra plan. None of those reflect what you can buy today.

We checked every price and model claim in this guide against official OpenAI and Google pages, then filled gaps with reputable news coverage. You will find the current lineup, real Indian rupee prices, a feature-by-feature breakdown, and a clear answer on who should pick which tool.

What ChatGPT and Gemini are in 2026

Both are AI assistants that chat, write, code, search the web, read files, and see images. The difference lies in who builds them and where they live.

ChatGPT

OpenAI makes ChatGPT. It launched in November 2022 and started the current AI boom. Today it runs a family of GPT-6 and GPT-5.6 models.

The headline model is GPT-6 Astra. OpenAI calls it its most intelligent model and says it sets new records in computer use, browsing, software engineering, and science.

It launched first to a small group of security partners through OpenAI’s Daybreak program, then rolled out to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users (9to5Mac). Where you can actually use it depends on your plan and the product surface, as the table below shows.

Gemini

Google DeepMind makes Gemini. It replaced Bard in February 2024 and now sits inside Search, Android, Chrome, Gmail, and Docs.

Google ships updates fast. Gemini 3.8 Flash arrived three weeks after 3.7 Flash, and Google calls it its most intelligent workhorse model (Google blog). Gemini 3.1 Pro remains the main reasoning model, and Deep Think handles the hardest problems.

Pricing: every plan compared (US and India)

At the $20 tier, the two cost almost the same. Gemini pulls ahead on extras, while ChatGPT charges more for its budget plan.

TierGemini (US)Gemini (India)ChatGPT (US)ChatGPT (India)
Free$0₹0$0₹0
BudgetAI Plus, $4.99₹399Go, $8₹399
StandardAI Pro, $19.99₹1,950Plus, $20₹1,999
PowerAI Ultra, $99.99 or $199.99₹6,500 or ₹19,500Pro, $100 / $200 / $500₹19,900 (the $200-tier equivalent)

Google AI Ultra 20x India price is ₹19,500 and $199.99 in the US; and the lower Ultra plan is ₹6,500 or $99.99 in the US. ChatGPT Go in India is ₹399 and $8 in the US.

Indian prices include 18% GST. ChatGPT India prices come from the in-app checkout as tracked by OpenTheRank, since OpenAI’s public page lists only plan features. Gemini prices come straight from Google’s India plans page.

What the extra money buys

Google bundles more non-AI value. AI Pro includes 5 TB of cloud storage, YouTube Premium Lite, and Gemini inside Gmail and Docs. AI Plus includes 400 GB of storage.

ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans may show ads (OpenAI began testing ads on Free in the US in February 2026), while Plus is ad-free. Plus unlocks GPT-6 in Chat, Astra in Work and Codex, projects, scheduled tasks, Sites, and expanded Codex. Pro adds Dots, OpenAI’s always-on agent, plus GPT-6 Pro (Astra) in Chat.

The Pro line changed twice in September. OpenAI paused new $200 sign-ups on September 10 because of Astra demand. On September 29, it reopened the $200 plan with a lower allowance (about 10x Plus for new subscribers, down from 20x) and added a $500 tier with 25x Plus usage and Astra Ultrafast. The $100 tier gives 5x Plus usage.

Both companies now meter usage dynamically. Google resets Gemini limits every five hours up to a weekly cap. OpenAI says unlimited chats are subject to abuse guardrails.

API pricing for developers

Gemini is far cheaper to build on. Gemini 3.8 Flash costs $0.75 per million input tokens and $3.75 per million output tokens (Google’s Gemini API pricing page). That rate is introductory through December 31, 2026, and rises to $1.50 and $7.50 from January 1, 2027.

GPT-6 Astra lists at $10 input and $50 output per million tokens. OpenAI’s smaller GPT-5.6 models cost much less, so compare the tier you actually need.

Head-to-head: how they compare on real tasks

ChatGPT wins on reasoning, coding, and agents. Gemini wins on speed, video, long documents, and fresh search results. Here is each area in detail.

Writing and content creation

Both tools write clean, usable drafts. Most top-ranking reviews still give ChatGPT a slight edge in tone and in following long, detailed instructions.

Gemini shines when your source material sits in Google Drive. It can pull from Docs and Gmail without uploads, and its Canvas exports to Google Docs in one click.

Winner: ChatGPT for polished prose, Gemini for drafts built on your own Google files.

Reasoning and problem solving

GPT-6 Astra leads here. On the independent Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, GPT-6 Astra (High) scores 51 against 41 for Gemini 3.8 Flash (High).

Keep the gap in context. Gemini 3.8 Flash is a fast, cheap workhorse model. Google’s heavier reasoning option, Deep Think, sits behind the Ultra plan.

Winner: ChatGPT.

Coding

ChatGPT is the stronger coding partner for most developers. OpenAI says GPT-6 Astra sets the state of the art on Terminal-Bench 4.0, a test of coding agents working in a real terminal (OpenAI on X). That is OpenAI’s own claim, and independent runs of the benchmark are less clear-cut, so treat it as a strong result rather than a settled ranking. Codex, OpenAI’s coding agent, is included on Plus.

Gemini fights back with Google Antigravity, an agent-first coding platform, plus Jules for background tasks. Its 1M token context lets you load large codebases, and Google advertises uploads of up to 30,000 lines of code on paid plans.

Winner: ChatGPT for hard coding work, Gemini for huge repos on a budget. For serious developers, ChatGPT is the better choice.

Research and web search

Both offer Deep Research, which reads hundreds of sources and writes a cited report. Free users get limited runs on both.

Gemini grounds answers in Google Search, which helps with fresh news, local results, and prices. Artificial Analysis also gives Gemini 3.8 Flash a higher score than GPT-6 Astra on its AA-Omniscience knowledge test.

Winner: Gemini for current facts, tie for long research reports.

Multimodal: images, video, and audio input

Gemini handles more input types natively. Artificial Analysis lists Gemini 3.8 Flash as accepting text, image, speech, and video, while GPT-6 Astra accepts text and image (source).

This matters if you want to summarize a YouTube lecture, analyze a meeting recording, or ask questions about a video clip.

Winner: Gemini.

Image generation

Both create and edit images well. Gemini uses Nano Banana and Nano Banana Pro, which excel at photo edits and consistent characters. ChatGPT offers image generation with Thinking on Plus, which suits diagrams, posters, and images with text.

Winner: Tie. Choose by style. However, since Image 2.0, most people will choose ChatGPT.

Video generation

This one is not close. OpenAI shut down the Sora app on April 26, 2026, and ended the Sora API on September 24, 2026. ChatGPT has no video generator today.

Gemini offers video generation from the $4.99 AI Plus plan upward, using Gemini Omni Flash and Veo 3.1 inside Google Flow. Limits are tighter on Plus and grow on higher plans.

Winner: Gemini.

Voice and live conversation

ChatGPT Voice and Gemini Live both hold natural spoken conversations. Both also let you share your camera so the AI can see what you see. ChatGPT includes voice with video from the Go plan upward.

Winner: Close. ChatGPT voice feels more polished, while Gemini Live connects better to Android and Google apps.

Speed

Gemini answers faster. Artificial Analysis measured Gemini 3.8 Flash (High) at over 200 tokens per second, against roughly 51 for GPT-6 Astra (Max).

Winner: Gemini.

Ecosystem, integrations, and agents

Gemini is the better choice inside Google’s world. ChatGPT is the better choice when your work spans many different apps.

Gemini: built into Google

Gemini lives where billions of people already work. Paid plans put it inside Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Vids, and Drive. On Android, it replaces Google Assistant, and Gemini in Chrome can browse sites and finish tasks for you. Chrome auto browse is available to AI Pro and Ultra users in both the US and India.

Other notable pieces include Gems (custom assistants on every plan), Gemini Notebook for research, and Daily Brief in the US. Gemini Spark, Google’s always-on agent, is available to AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in select countries.

ChatGPT: the wider app hub

ChatGPT connects outward instead. Its plugins, apps such as Canva and Spotify, and extensions for Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Google Sheets let one assistant work across many tools.

ChatGPT Work handles multi-step tasks on desktop, web, and mobile. GPT-6 Astra makes computer use nearly twice as fast as before, per 9to5Mac’s report of OpenAI’s announcement. Pro users also get Dots, an always-on agent.

ChatGPT also offers Sites for building simple web pages, scheduled tasks, Study Mode, and a Slack and Teams integration for workplaces.

Bottom line: if your files, mail, and calendar sit in Google, Gemini saves you real time. If you juggle Microsoft Office, Slack, Canva, and other apps, ChatGPT reaches further.

Context window, memory, and privacy

Gemini reads more at once. ChatGPT gives you clearer limits per plan. Both train on consumer chats unless you opt out.

Context window

The context window is how much text the AI can hold in mind at one time. Bigger windows mean longer documents and longer chats without the AI forgetting.

PlanGeminiChatGPT
FreeNot published27K (Instant), varies (Reasoning)
Standard ($20)1M tokens, up to 1,500 pages of uploads54K (Instant), 256K (Reasoning)
Power ($100+)1M tokens, higher limits128K (Instant), 400K (Reasoning)

Sources: Google AI plans, ChatGPT pricing. OpenAI notes that part of each window goes to system instructions and memory, so usable input is smaller.

Memory

Both remember facts about you across chats. ChatGPT offers memory with past chats on every plan, with more on paid tiers. Gemini offers Personal Intelligence, which can draw on your Google apps, and lets you import memory from other assistants.

Privacy and data controls

OpenAI’s pricing page states that consumer chats on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro may train its models, with an opt-out available. Google’s consumer Gemini apps work similarly through your Gemini Apps Activity setting, described in the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub.

For stricter guarantees, use a work plan. ChatGPT Business and Enterprise, and Gemini Enterprise or Workspace accounts, add admin controls and keep company data out of training by default.

Tip: never paste passwords, bank details, Aadhaar numbers, or client secrets into either tool on a personal plan.

Benchmarks: what the numbers really say

On independent tests, GPT-6 Astra is smarter, and Gemini 3.8 Flash is faster and far cheaper. Treat any single score with caution.

Three caveats before you trust a benchmark

  1. Index versions change. At launch, Artificial Analysis scored Gemini 3.8 Flash at 59 on an earlier version of its index (launch note). The newer version rescales every model, so older articles quote very different numbers.
  2. Vendors pick their tests. OpenAI and Google both publish charts where their own model wins. Independent labs give a fairer picture. Human-preference leaderboards can also tell a different story from automated indexes.
  3. Flash is not Google’s top model. Artificial Analysis reports that Gemini 4 Argon matches GPT-6 Astra on its index (changelog). However, Argon may not yet be available to regular users in the Gemini app, so check before assuming it is.

For everyday chats, both models are more than good enough. Benchmarks matter most for hard coding, math, and long autonomous tasks.
